There is a time of year when anticipation turns into magic: the scent of spices fills the crisp air, lights illuminate the lanes of the historic centre, and hearts prepare for Christmas.

In the hushed stillness of the approaching winter, every moment becomes an emotion. In Bressanone, that emotion has a precise address: Hotel Elephant. Tucked among the lanes of the historic centre, a distinguished icon of Tyrolean hospitality for more than 500 years, the hotel becomes even more enchanting at this time of year. Just a few steps from its doors, guests can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the traditional Christmas Market, which fills Cathedral Square with wooden stalls, singing, lights and fragrances. As evening falls, the city offers one of its most evocative experiences with “OOPS 2 – A Light & Music Show for UNICEF” at the Hofburg: the courtyard of the prince-bishops’ residence becomes a theatre of light, its Baroque architecture brought to life through projections and music, in a show that moves adults and children alike, accompanied by a soundtrack by Giorgio Moroder (from 26 December to 9 January).

After a stroll among the market stalls, the light show or an afternoon of shopping in the lanes of the centre, returning to the Elephant feels like a warm embrace. Set in the former stables and still adorned with the original nineteenth-century columns, the spa welcomes guests with its warmth and privacy: steam, rest and tranquillity to leave behind the cold and the bustle of the day.

In the evening, dining is a delight for the eyes and the palate. In the two traditional stube dining rooms of Ristorante Elephant or at the four tables of the exclusive Apostelstube (the first restaurant in South Tyrol to receive the prestigious Michelin star, held from 1962 to 1970 and regained in 2019), Chef Mathias Bachmann delights even the most demanding palates with dishes of distinctive character, combining an Alpine-Mediterranean identity with influences from around the world (with a particular fondness for Japan and its cooking methods), offering truly unique and refined gastronomic journeys. This is cuisine with a strong identity, capable of turning every dish into a little journey.
