For KIBO, California is as much a feeling as a destination. Its account of the Golden State describes a sense of place embracing hope, innovation, creativity and a philosophy of relaxed optimism.

In the Far West that ends at the Pacific, where change is part of everyday life and freedom finds expression in new styles and trends, California looks to the future. It is the setting for KIBO’s proposed journey: an invitation to explore a mix of cities and nature in the heart of an America still taking shape.

Stretching roughly 900 miles from Mexico to Oregon, California encompasses a kaleidoscope of experiences. KIBO can help plan the stages of a fly-drive itinerary exploring some of the state’s most distinctive places.

Cities and coast

Between iconic cities such as Los Angeles, a sprawling metropolis between desert and ocean, shaped by Hollywood and its role as a symbol of desire and possibility, and San Francisco, a historic stronghold of civil rights with striking architecture, hills and steep streets, there are other places to discover.

The state capital, Sacramento, offers a more compact scale and a glimpse of a traditional American city, while Santa Monica and Santa Barbara express the relaxed lifestyle of the coast. Close to the Mexican border, San Diego has beaches and neighbourhoods such as Old Town, where buildings retain a colonial character.

In between lie vineyards, the Mojave Desert and ancient forests of giant sequoias. California has nine national parks, more than any other US state, including Yosemite and Sequoia National Park.

KIBO’s team can put together an outline itinerary tailored to the season and the number of days available, helping travellers create their own original California dream.
