SAN VIGILIO DI MAREBBE (BZ) – In the beating heart of the Dolomites, recognised and protected as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, winter takes on a timeless sense of wonder. Among the six tiny, enchanting gems scattered across Val Badia, the villages around San Vigilio di Marebbe and San Martino in Badia bring an Alpine fairy tale to life, sculpted in a soft blanket of white snow. Here, where the protected landscapes of Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park and Puez-Odle Nature Park create an imposing, majestic and sublime setting, white reigns supreme. Vertical rock faces carve their outlines against the sky, while the villages’ traditional houses, orderly and discreet, welcome visitors with an immediate, profound sense of warmth and of truly coming home. In this intimate corner of the world, where the city’s chaos and noise fade into distant memories, Christmas is not simply an occasion but a deep sensory and emotional experience.

The Christmas market, an old-world retreat away from the crowds

As December wraps the village in its muffled tranquillity, San Vigilio reveals a small, romantic and exceptionally atmospheric Christmas market. Far from the crowds and bustle of mass tourism, this Alpine gathering place invites visitors to slow down and rediscover the luxury of simplicity and human connection. The pretty wooden stalls blend harmoniously into the village, illuminated by countless soft lights and warm glimmers beneath the Dolomites’ starry night sky.

Walking among the stalls means being welcomed by a symphony of intoxicating scents: the crisp mountain air mingles with the spicy aromas of steaming mulled wine, baked apples, cinnamon and freshly baked traditional sweets. It is an immersion in an old-world atmosphere where time seems to have stood still. Journalists and travellers seeking authenticity will find a precious retreat, enriched by unique handicrafts, woodcarvings scented with the forest and boiled-wool creations that reveal the mastery of skilled hands. There is no hurry and no jostling, only the pleasure of rediscovering the most genuine Christmas spirit, soothed by the silence of the mountains and the warmth of a community that carefully preserves its roots.

Friday 11 December, the adrenaline and ancestral power of the Krampus parade

The rhythm changes, anticipation becomes electric and adrenaline soars on the evening of Friday 11 December, when the village streets become the natural stage for one of the most spectacular, powerful and photographed winter events in the Alps: an extraordinary parade of more than one hundred Krampus.

These legendary, fascinating devils of Central European tradition burst into the village in a show of overwhelming visual and acoustic power. The spectacle is unforgettable: masks made from Swiss pine or fir, hand-carved by master craftspeople with fierce details, imposing goat or ibex horns and devilish eyes gleaming in the dark. Participants wear heavy, rough, dark or pale furs, moving with an intense physicality that evokes ancient pagan rituals connected with the winter solstice and the age-old struggle between light and darkness.

The procession advances through thick clouds of theatrical smoke, the red glow of burning torches and smoke effects cutting through the icy night air, framed by the imposing silhouettes of the church and snow-covered peaks. The rhythm of this spectacular march is set by the deep, measured, tribal beat of live percussion and drum groups, mingling with the deafening, rhythmic sound of heavy cowbells strapped around the performers’ waists. It is an ancestral, magnetic experience of extraordinary expressive force, capable of taking one’s breath away and giving residents, visitors and photojournalists an unforgettable visual story suspended between myth, legend and pure Alpine energy.

Beyond downhill skiing in the renowned Plan de Corones ski area, the destination offers a range of distinctive, restorative experiences: snowshoe walks through quiet woods with mountain guides; cross-country skiing along fairy-tale trails leading to Rifugio Pederü; romantic carriage rides drawn by powerful Noriker horses; and the excitement of dog sledding, with huskies pulling the sled, to feel like a real musher at the foot of Sas de Pütia. Finally, its ecological commitment and sustainability-focused management have made San Vigilio the first destination in South Tyrol to achieve the prestigious international GSTC certification for sustainable tourism.
